Oscar Piastri's route to Formula One included one of the most publicly contentious contract disputes in the sport's recent history, but the Australian driver's on-track composure since arriving at McLaren has made that episode feel like a distant memory.

A Record-Setting Junior Career

Piastri won championships in Formula Renault Eurocup, Formula 3, and Formula 2 in his rookie season in each category, an extremely rare feat that made him one of the most highly regarded prospects to reach Formula One in years, backed by management from former grand prix winner Mark Webber.

A Very Public Contract Dispute

Despite being contracted as Alpine's reserve driver, Piastri controversially declined to accept a race seat with the team for 2023, publicly disputing Alpine's own announcement of his signing and instead securing a move to McLaren after Formula One's Contract Recognition Board ruled in his favor. It was an unusually public standoff for a driver yet to start a single grand prix.

Building Toward Race Wins

Piastri's rookie season with McLaren in 2023 was solid rather than spectacular, but a major car upgrade in 2024 transformed his results, delivering his maiden grand prix win at the Hungarian Grand Prix and a second victory in Azerbaijan the same year, making him the fifth Australian to win a Formula One race.

A Genuine Title Fight in 2025

The following season saw Piastri emerge as a genuine championship contender, leading the standings for a significant portion of the year on the back of an early winning streak before a late-season dip allowed teammate Lando Norris to overtake him. He ultimately finished third in the championship with seven wins and 13 podiums, both records for an Australian driver.

A Harder 2026

Piastri's start to the 2026 season has been considerably more difficult, including failing to start two of the opening races due to mechanical issues, leaving him well off the championship pace established by Mercedes' two drivers. Reports throughout the season have suggested he is weighing his long-term future, even though he remains under contract with McLaren through at least 2028.
